Vice President Election 2025: Voting begins for Vice Presidential election, PM Modi casts first vote

PM Modi Casts First Vote: Voting has started today for the election of the 15th Vice President of the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi cast his vote first, after which other MPs are also voting.

In this election, there is a direct contest between NDA candidate CP Radhakrishnan and opposition’s B Sudarshan Reddy. Voting will continue till 5 pm and counting of votes will start at 6 pm. The results are expected by late evening.

Why is this election happening?

This election is being held after the then Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar suddenly resigned from his post on 21 July, while his term still had two years left to end. Due to his sudden resignation, elections for the post of Vice President of the country are being held before time.

Before voting, NDA and India Block had made a strategy

On Monday, a day before the voting, Prime Minister Modi addressed a meeting of NDA MPs in Parliament. He wrote on social media platform X that people are very excited about CP Radhakrishnan’s candidature and he is confident that he will prove to be an excellent Vice President. On the other hand, leaders of parties of the INDIA block also met at the Constitution House and discussed the election process.

Which parties have distanced themselves from the elections?

In this election for the post of Vice President, some major regional parties have decided to stay away from voting. These include Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). These parties have announced that they will not vote in this election. However, even the absence of these parties is not expected to have any major impact on the results, because the mathematics of numbers looks strong in favor of NDA .
