SC's big order: Aadhaar to be 12th valid document in EC's Bihar voter roll revision

The Supreme Court has given a big order on Bihar SIR. The Supreme Court said that Aadhar card should be considered as the “12th document” for the purpose of identification in SIR. Aadhar card will also be taken into account to establish the identity of a person for the purpose of inclusion/exclusion of a voter in the voter list.

The Supreme Court asked the Election Commission to consider accepting Aadhaar as a document for voter identification in the special deep revision in Bihar, making it clear that it is not a proof of citizenship. “Out of 7.24 crore, 99.6 per cent have already submitted the document. In the previous order, Aadhaar was allowed for 65 lakh people. Now, none of the petitioners for them have pointed out that a large number of people have been wrongly excluded,” the EC said during the hearing.

Supreme Court gives clarity on Aadhar Card in Bihar SIR…

  • The Supreme Court said that Aadhaar alone should be considered equal to 11 valid documents.
  • The court said that Aadhaar should be considered as the 12th document.
  • The Supreme Court said that the Election Commission can verify Aadhaar (whether Aadhaar is correct or not).
  • Justice Suryakant said that we are making it clear that Aadhaar is only for proof of residence and not for determining citizenship.

Not asking to allow illegal immigrants

Justice Suryakant said, ‘Nobody is asking to allow illegal migrants. We know that Aadhaar is proof of identity, not of citizenship. Suppose it is the twelfth document, what is the problem in it?’ The Supreme Court said, ‘For the purpose of establishing the identity of people included or excluded in the revised voter list process, the Aadhaar card issued under the Aadhaar Act 2016 will be accepted and it will be considered as the 12th document. However, the officials can verify the authenticity of the card presented and the Aadhaar card will not be considered as proof of citizenship.’

99.6% have already submitted documents

Earlier, the petitioners said, para legal volunteers were to be appointed, but they were not appointed. Election Commission lawyer Rakesh Dwivedi said that they want this for illegal migrants. Justice Suryakant said that no one wants illegal migrants to be included in the voter list. According to the Election Commission, 99.6% of the citizens of Bihar have already submitted one of the 11 listed documents. According to the Election Commission, 99.6 percent of the 7.24 crore have already submitted the documents. In the previous order, Aadhaar was allowed for 65 lakh people. Now for them, no petitioner has pointed out that a large number of people have been wrongly excluded.

The next hearing of the case will be on next Monday i.e. 15th September
