Indian Railways: You will find the composition of the coach in trains almost the same in every train. First the engine, then the guard compartment or brake van.

Then General Coach, then Sleeper Coach and then AC Coach. Next to the AC compartment, again the sleeper compartment and general compartment and lastly the guard compartment. In this article, we will tell you what is the reason behind applying them like this.

Appropriate for security

A senior railway official says that the order of the coaches in the train has been made keeping in mind the safety and ease of the passengers. It has been running since the British Raj. Earlier also the upper class coaches, ladies compartment etc. used to be in the middle of the train. Luggage coaches and lower class coaches are placed near the same engine. The coaches near the engine feel more jerks than the coaches in the middle.

Upper class passengers do not have to walk much

Entry and exit gates at the railway station are made in the middle of the station. Have you wondered why this is done? This happens so that the upper class passenger gets a chance to board the train as soon as he enters the station. Similarly, when they get off the train, they see the exit gate in front. It is assumed that the time of those traveling in the upper class is very valuable. That’s why such a system has been kept for them.

The crowd splits

A senior Railway Board official said that usually more passengers travel in general coaches and sleeper coaches in trains. Less passengers travel in AC coaches as compared to them. When the AC and sleeper compartments will be placed at different places in the train, then the number of passengers boarding them will also be divided. This helps the railway administration in managing the crowd.

Troubleshooting engine noise

The practice of placing upper class coaches in the middle of railways started at a time when the steam engine was very much dominated in India. Then came diesel engines. There was a lot of noise in both these engines. When the train started it used to make a lot of noise. The upper class passenger can hear the noise of the train less, so their coach is kept away from the engine. However, in today’s time, most of the electric engines are running, which makes less noise when running.
