Analysts Warn Israel’s Leader-Targeting Strategy In Iran May Backfire

0

As the 2026 Iran War enters its fourth week, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have shifted from destroying missile silos to a “surgical” removal of the Islamic Republic’s political and clerical elite. However, as of Thursday, March 19, analysts are questioning whether this strategy is achieving its goal of regime collapse or simply creating a more dangerous, unpredictable adversary.

The Decapitation List: March 2026

In a matter of weeks, the leadership structure that governed Iran for decades has been hollowed out:

  • Ayatollah Ali Khamenei: Killed in the opening salvo on Feb 28.

  • Ali Larijani: The “backroom powerbroker” and security chief, killed on March 17.

  • Gholam Reza Soleimani: Head of the Basij internal security force, killed in a “combat tent” strike on March 17.

  • Esmail Khatib: Intelligence Minister, confirmed killed on March 18.

The “Son of the Leader” Factor: Mojtaba’s Rise

Contrary to hopes of a moderate takeover, the transition of power to Mojtaba Khamenei has signaled a hardline shift. In his first written address on March 12, Mojtaba—who is reportedly recovering from injuries sustained in the initial strikes—emphasized:

  1. No Compromise: He called for “regret-inducing defense.”

  2. Economic Warfare: He ordered the Strait of Hormuz to remain a “lever of pressure.”

  3. Asymmetric Expansion: He warned of opening “additional fronts” where the enemy has no experience.

Strategic Backfire: Radicalization vs. Collapse

Political scientist Max Abrahms notes that when you remove a leader who practiced even a modicum of restraint, you often empower a successor who has everything to prove and nothing to lose. The death of Ali Larijani, who was once seen as a potential bridge for negotiations, has effectively ended the “diplomatic track,” leaving only military escalation on the table.

Reality Check

The core assumption of the US-Israeli strategy was that killing the leaders would “decapitate” the regime and spark a popular revolution. While the “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests of late 2025 showed deep cracks in the regime, the current war has triggered a “Rally ‘Round the Flag” effect. Many Iranians, even those who dislike the government, are currently sheltering from airstrikes and viewing the conflict through the lens of national survival rather than political liberation.

The Loopholes

The IDF claims these strikes “degrade command and control.” In fact, this is a “Bureaucratic Loophole”—the IRGC is designed to operate as a decentralized, “hydra-headed” organization where local commanders have high levels of autonomy. Therefore, killing a minister in Tehran does not stop a missile crew in Shiraz from firing. Still, the “Martyrdom Loophole” remains; by killing clerics during negotiations (as was the case on Feb 28), Israel has handed the regime a powerful propaganda tool to justify attacks on “civilian” energy targets in the Gulf.

What This Means for You

If you are an observer of global markets or live in the region, prepare for an “Energy Siege.” First, realize that as long as the ECI continues to target Iranian leadership, Iran will continue to target Qatari and Emirati gas facilities, as seen in the missile strikes earlier today (March 19).

Then, if you are a traveler, understand that airspace across the Middle East is becoming a patchwork of “no-fly zones,” causing massive delays for flights between Europe and Asia. Finally, understand that the “Strait of Hormuz” closure is no longer a threat—it is a reality. This will manifest in higher shipping costs for everything from electronics to grain by next month.

What’s Next

Expect the UN Security Council to convene a marathon session this weekend as European allies (Germany and France) distance themselves further from the “decapitation” policy. Then, look for Mojtaba Khamenei’s first video appearance, which will be used to prove he is healthy and in control. Finally, expect the “Operation Roaring Lion” (the Israeli air campaign) to move toward northern Iran and the Caspian coast by next week.
