GMC Bhavnagar Ragging Case: The truth about a shocking and extremely disgusting culture prevalent in India’s medical education system has surfaced online, revealing its dark reality. We are talking about the Government Medical College (GMC) ‘Sir T Hospital’ in Bhavnagar, Gujarat. CCTV footage from this college is going viral, showing how 13 first-year post-graduate resident doctors in the orthopedic department were systematically harassed, mentally troubled, and heavily exploited financially by their six seniors.

This horrific incident came to light when Dr Dhruv Chauhan, National Spokesperson of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) JDN, shared information about the horrific ragging incident on social media.

In his post, which quickly went viral on the internet, he posed the following question: “What would you do if your seniors tortured you, made you stand in the OT, made you stand all night, and demanded selfies every hour to show your timing and location? This is exactly what is happening at GMC Bhavnagar in Gujarat, where some animals in the Ortho department are doing this to their juniors. They should all be fired, and their professor and HOD should also be investigated because they were just spectators!”

Following his initial statement, Dr. Chauhan shared a disturbing CCTV image showing junior resident doctors being forced to perform humiliating “murga” (cock) poses in front of everyone inside the hospital.

He said, “As soon as I got this CCTV image from GMC Bhavnagar (Gujarat), I was stunned for a moment. I thought how mentally and physically these resident doctors of orthopedic surgery must have suffered when they were made to do the ‘murga’ (cock) position in front of everyone in the operation theatre. Every NEET UG and PG aspirant and their parents must watch this to know the reality of this highly exaggerated profession in India.”

Government takes strict action: 6 senior students suspended

The Gujarat government swung into action after the matter came to light. According to reports, after an 8.5-hour-long meeting of the Anti-Ragging Committee, chaired by Dean Dr. Chinmay Shah, all six senior students were officially found guilty. The administration immediately suspended them for terms ranging from six months to two years and issued a strict notice of expulsion from the campus hostel.

The Internet’s Reaction: Revealing a Bad Culture

The issue quickly became a topic of debate on the social media platform X. Many people confirmed that this practice is common in government hospitals across the country, something everyone knows about but doesn’t talk about openly.

One user pointed out the long-term mental impact on healthcare workers, saying: “Do you understand why doctors become stone-hearted after they start practicing? Because they are treated badly during training and it is very common. I don’t understand why more doctors don’t speak out against the ill-treatment of their juniors.”

Another user agreed and demanded a change in the system to protect the trainees and wrote, “I completely agree. The backbone of every hospital or medical institute is its trainees. When will we stop harassing them? This happens every day in most places. Such senior and reporting officers are not contributing anything to the development of the country.”

At the same time, some people directly pointed fingers at the students who promote this bad practice in the name of tradition. They wrote, “All medical students are responsible for this. They ragged juniors in the name of teaching them ‘MBBS culture.’ Some crazy people even take it to extremes, as shown below. In fact, juniors call seniors Sir and Madam instead of Bhai and Didi. Lol… What’s the point of whining now?”

Another user, referring to the action taken after the investigation, wrote: “These six doctors have been suspended from the college. During this period, they will not be able to participate in clinical or academic activities, nor will they be able to work at Sir T Hospital. They have also been asked to vacate the hostel. An official complaint will be filed today.”
