What is Form 26AS

Form 26AS is a Tax Credit Statement. It contains complete information about the tax deducted on your salary or other income. Form 26AS contains information about TDS and TCS, advance tax, refund. It contains details of high value transactions of a person like purchase of a property or big mutual fund investment. If there is any mistake in it like missing TDS entry, then you can contact the person or organization who has deducted the tax and ask them to correct it. Form 26AS can be downloaded from the Income Tax Department website.

What is AIS?

The Income Tax Department introduced the Annual Information Statement (AIS) in the year 2019. The detailed version of Form 26AS is the Annual Information Statement. It contains all the information of the taxpayer. AIS includes many types of information including your salary, interest received from the bank, dividend income, rental income, large purchases like property, mutual fund transactions, foreign transactions, share trading, GST sales, large credit card expenses.

In this way, AIS collects and displays information like your income, investment and tax deduction at one place. With this, you can know which income details are available with the Income Tax Department. If you see something in it that is not correct, then you can go to the portal and give feedback on that entry and request for correction. In AIS, taxpayers also get the option to give feedback on every transaction. You can download AIS from the Income Tax Department website.

Why is it necessary to check 26AS and AIS before filing ITR?

When taxpayers visit the Income Tax Department’s website to file ITR, they see that many information related to their income is already auto-filled there. Actually, this information is taken from 26AS and AIS. Now you must be thinking that when all the information related to your income is already available on the Income Tax Department’s website, then why is it necessary to check 26AS and AIS before filing ITR.

Download Form 26AS like this:

1. First of all go to the income tax website https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/ link.
2. After this, log in to the e-filing account.
3. Then click on the View Form-26AS link in the My Account option.
4. After this, select the assessment year and click on View Time.
5. Then click on the download option and download the form.

How to download AIS

1. First of all go to the Income Tax Department website and log in to your e-filing account.
2. To log in, you will need your PAN or Aadhaar number and password.
3. After this, you can visit the AIS portal and see your statement.
4. Then you can download your AIS in PDF, JSON or CSV file format.
5. The Income Tax Department has also launched a free mobile app AIS for Taxpayers.
6. Through this app, you can view AIS on your mobile phone itself.
