Top US economist Jeffrey Sachs has issued a stark warning to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), suggesting that the federation is courting “disaster” by deepening its military alignment with the US and Israel. In an interview with ANI, Sachs argued that the UAE’s status as a global luxury and tourism hub makes it uniquely vulnerable in a hot war, as cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi are built for “partying and investment,” not as fortified missile defense zones.
Sachs criticized the UAE’s decision to “double down” on its reliance on American protection, a strategy he believes is a fundamental miscalculation of regional stability.

The “Resort vs. Fortress” Dilemma
Sachs highlighted the inherent risk of a tourism-dependent economy entering a high-intensity conflict zone.
-
Fragile Infrastructure: Unlike traditional military powers, the UAE’s value lies in its skyscrapers, luxury resorts, and status as a safe haven for global wealth. These are “soft targets” that cannot be easily protected from modern missile barrages.
-
The Economic Suicide: “To enter a war zone is to defeat the entire purpose of a place like Dubai,” Sachs noted, suggesting that even the threat of conflict could trigger a massive flight of capital and tourists.
-
The “Fatal Friendship”: Quoting Henry Kissinger, Sachs warned that being a friend of the United States in the current geopolitical climate could be “fatal” for Gulf monarchies that bet everything on the US military umbrella.
Iran’s Ultimatum to Gulf Neighbors
Sachs’ assessment comes as Tehran ramps up its rhetoric against nations hosting US military assets. On March 20, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a formal warning to West Asian nations:

-
Complicity in Aggression: Iran stated that any country allowing its territory or facilities to be used for US or “Zionist” strikes against Tehran would be considered an accomplice.
-
The “Root Cause”: Tehran identifies US bases in the Gulf as the primary source of regional instability and has warned of “consequences” for host nations if these bases are activated for offensive operations.
-
Targeting Energy Infrastructure: In response, Gulf states have condemned Iranian strikes on their own energy assets, further pushing them toward the US-Israel security axis.
Key Takeaways from Sachs’ Warning
| Concept | The UAE’s Current Bet | The Sachs/Tehran Warning |
| Security | US Military “Umbrella” & Abraham Accords | A “losing proposition” that invites Iranian retaliation |
| Economy | Global Tourism & Financial Hub | War turns “resort areas” into “blown up” zones |
| Strategy | Alignment with US/Israel | Need for regional neutrality to safeguard trillions in assets |
Investigative Insight: The “Abraham Accords” Trap
Sachs’ critique of the Abraham Accords suggests that what was once hailed as a “Peace Deal” has effectively become a Forward Defense Line for Israel and the US. By normalizing ties and integrating air defense systems, the UAE has inadvertently made itself a “front-line state” in the eyes of Iran. While the UAE hopes this integration provides superior protection, Sachs argues it actually removes the “buffer” that previously kept Dubai safe from direct Iranian aggression. The “absurd mess” Sachs refers to is the UAE’s attempt to remain a neutral “Global City” while simultaneously becoming a key node in a regional military alliance against its most powerful neighbor.
