Toll Tax: The average waiting time of vehicles at toll plazas during 2018-19 was eight minutes. With the introduction of FASTag, the average waiting time for vehicles has come down to 47 seconds during 2020-21 and 2021-22.

Toll Tax: How do you pay toll when you travel on the highway? Most of the drivers there pay toll through FASTag using modern technology for this. Earlier, toll was paid by cash payment. But now Fastag technology will also become history. Now toll payment can be done through a new technology.

Now at the toll plaza, the toll will be collected through automatic system by identifying the number plates of the vehicles. The central government has also started pilot testing of this system. The government believes that this will reduce the congestion of vehicles at the toll plaza and the same fee will be charged from the vehicle which runs on the highway. Union Road and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari gave this information at the 19th Indo-US Economic Summit of the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC) on Monday.

What is ‘automatic number plate reader camera’ technology

In his address at the program, Nitin Gadkari said that the new system of toll collection being tested is based on ‘Automatic Number Plate Reader Camera’ technology. In this, the vehicle does not need to stop at the toll plaza to collect the fee. The cameras installed at the automated toll plazas will collect the toll after seeing the number plate. Gadkari said that due to this the traffic will continue without stopping or slowing down and the vehicle which runs on the highway, the same will be charged.

What is the goal of implementing this system?

The Union Minister said that we want to achieve two objectives with this new technology. First, the toll booth should continue with the unhindered movement of traffic and there the drivers have to pay according to the usage. He said that Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) is being installed on all newly constructed National Highways and existing ‘Four Plus Lane’ National Highways for smooth and safe traffic.
