If you drive on the highway, you often have to pass through a toll plaza where every vehicle has to pay a certain amount. This toll tax is taken for the construction and maintenance of roads.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has made some strict rules for this but there are some special people and vehicles who do not have to pay toll tax. Let us know who is included in this list.
These people are exempted from toll tax
According to the toll tax rules, many high ranking officials and people associated with government services are exempted from toll tax.
Top posts in the country: Vehicles of the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Governors and Lieutenant Governors of India are exempted from toll tax.
Judiciary and Legislature: Chief Justices and other judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts, MPs, MLAs, Speakers of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, and high-ranking foreign dignitaries on official visits are also exempted.
Security and emergency services: Vehicles of emergency services like army, police, fire brigade and ambulance are exempted from toll tax.
Brave soldiers: People awarded with Param Vir Chakra, Ashok Chakra, Mahavir Chakra, Kirti Chakra and Shaurya Chakra are also not required to pay toll tax.
Government officials: Officials from the Ministry of Defence, Indian Army, Navy and Air Force officials, paramilitary forces and NHAI officials are also included in the list.
How to get discount?
To get exemption from toll tax, it is mandatory for all these persons to show their photo identity card at the toll plaza. At some toll plazas, local residents are also given annual passes which exempt them from toll tax.
