Nitin Gadkari said that now preparations are being made to remove toll plazas and install number plate reader cameras, which will collect toll tax from drivers without FASTags. According to the report, the time taken for collection of toll tax will be reduced through these automatic number plate reader cameras.

The country is going to get freedom from the hassle of FASTag soon. Along with this, toll plazas are also going to be a thing of the past. Actually, the government is working on a plan to recover toll tax from automatic number plate reader camera by removing toll from the national highway. This information has been shared by Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari.

According to a media report published on Business Standard, at present, tax is deducted at toll plazas through FASTag . But, soon automatic number plate reader cameras will do this work. The cameras will read these automatic number plates and toll tax money will be deducted from your bank account.

Giving information in this regard, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said that work is going on as a pilot project on this scheme. He said that legal amendment will also be considered to implement this scheme.

Number plate reader cameras will be installed

Nitin Gadkari said that now preparations are being made to remove toll plazas and install number plate reader cameras, which will collect toll tax from the drivers. According to the report, the time taken for collection of toll tax through automatic number plate reader cameras will be reduced. Gadkari said that, however, some hurdles are also emerging in this project, which are being considered for resolving. For example, if something other than the number is written on the number plate, then there may be a problem in reading the camera.

Try to solve these problems

The Union Minister said that apart from this, if we talk about another big problem, then how to punish the driver who does not pay toll tax, because there is no legal provision to punish the vehicle owner who skips the toll tax. He said that this too needs to be brought under the purview of the law. Gadkari also emphasized that vehicles which do not have such number plates will be given a certain time to get it installed.

Now 97% collection through FASTag

After the implementation of FASTag for toll tax deduction by the government, along with the time taken for deduction, the long lines at toll plazas have also been relieved to a great extent. At present, 97 percent of the total toll tax on the highways of about Rs 40,000 crore is being collected from FASTags. Whereas, three percent tax is being collected through cash or card.

Talking about the time taken in this process, after the arrival of FASTags, the average time taken by a vehicle to cross the toll plaza is about 47 seconds. During the earlier manual mode collection, where about 112 vehicles pass through a toll per hour in an hour, after the introduction of this facility, more than 260 vehicles easily cross the toll in an hour.

These problems with FASTag

After the implementation of the FASTag system of toll collection in the country, while there have been some benefits, some major problems have also come to the fore. For example, FASTag is installed on some vehicles, but due to low account balance, there is a delay. Apart from this, sometimes internet connectivity issues are also encountered at some toll plazas, due to which it takes a lot of time. Keeping all these problems in mind, the government has prepared a new plan. After resolving the problems encountered in it, this system can be implemented in the country soon.
