The customer does not check those notes at that time, but later when he gets these mutilated notes, his tension increases.

SBI’s reply on mutilated note
However, most of the banks do not believe that the cut fat notes have been given by him to the customer. But if the customer complains about mutilated notes, will the bank exchange these notes? The country’s largest bank State Bank of India has answered this question. SBI has said in response to a customer’s query that the quality of notes in the bank is checked through state-of-the-art note sorting machines. Chances of getting mutilated/torn or such bad notes are negligible. If you receive such a note, you can exchange the note at any of our branches.

RBI rules on mutilated notes
However, circulars are also issued by RBI from time to time regarding mutilated notes. You can easily get such notes exchanged at any bank branch or Reserve Bank office. According to the rules of the Reserve Bank, a person can get a maximum of 20 notes exchanged at a time, the total maximum value of these notes should not exceed Rs 5,000.

Fees for exchanging torn notes?

The customer does not have to pay any charge for getting the exchange done at the centers decided by the Reserve Bank. More than 20 notes can be accepted in banks against a receipt. It is paid later. For this, the bank charges you the fees fixed by the RBI.

What to do if mutilated notes come out from ATM?
If mutilated notes have been withdrawn from the ATM, then to exchange them, you will have to apply to the bank from whose ATM the cash is withdrawn. In this application, the date, time and location of ATM will have to be written. Also you have to attach the withdrawal slip. If you do not have the slip, then you will have to give the details of the message received on your mobile. Actually, according to the RBI guidelines, no government bank can agree to exchange notes.
