Railway Ticket Booking: India Post offers a wide range of services across the country. These include sending letters and parcels, as well as banking, small savings schemes, and insurance (Postal Life Insurance).

The Postal Department’s small savings schemes are run by the government, and millions of people across the country invest in them. Their aim is to promote savings and financial inclusion, i.e., make banking services accessible to everyone. Now, the government is also offering train ticket bookings through post offices.

train ticket booking from post office

Post offices now offer railway ticketing services. This means you can now book train tickets from your nearest post office. Railway tickets for all classes (sleeper, AC, and general) are available at select post offices across the country.

According to the official website of India Post, ‘In collaboration with the Ministry of Railways (MOR), railway reservation tickets of all categories are being sold at select post offices so that people can avail this facility at their nearest locations.’

This service is being offered in areas without railway stations or counters. Currently, this facility is available at 333 post offices across the country, primarily in rural and semi-urban areas.

How to book railway tickets from post office?

Railway tickets can only be booked at post offices that have Passenger Reservation System (PRS) terminals. Follow these steps to book a ticket:

  • First of all find the post office in your area where there is a PRS counter.
  • These usually take place in places where there is no railway station or ticket counter.
  • Go there and give complete details of your train journey.
  • Such as from where to where, date of travel, name or number of the train and class of ticket.
  • Then fill out the form and make the payment. Your ticket will be booked right there.

New railway rule

Starting October 1st, the Railways implemented a new rule. Now, when the general reservation booking window opens on the IRCTC website (irctc.co.in) or app, only Aadhaar-authenticated users will be able to book tickets for the first 15 minutes. Authorized railway agents will remain subject to the same 10-minute restriction, meaning they will not be able to book tickets for the first 10 minutes of the opening window.

If your account isn’t linked to Aadhaar, you won’t be able to book tickets within the first 15 minutes of the window opening. The Railways says this step is to prevent misuse of the ticket reservation system. The general reservation window opens 60 days before the train’s departure date.
