Great off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has now said goodbye to the Indian Premier League i.e. IPL. On Wednesday, 27 August, he officially announced his retirement from IPL. He will no longer be seen playing professional cricket in India, as he had said goodbye to international cricket in December last year during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy during the tour of Australia. However, he has also revealed a new plan. Ashwin has said that he will be seen playing in other T20 leagues.
R Ashwin, while informing about his retirement from IPL on his official X handle, wrote, “Special day and hence a special beginning. It is said that every end has a new beginning, my time as an IPL cricketer is ending today, but my time as an explorer of the game in various leagues starts today. Would like to thank all the franchise teams for the wonderful memories and relationships over the years and most importantly IPL and BCCI for what they have given me so far. Looking forward to enjoying and making the most of whatever lies ahead.”

Last season, Ashwin played for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), but his performance was not good. In such a situation, there was a possibility of him being released, but before that he announced his retirement from IPL. Chennai Super Kings bought R Ashwin for Rs 9.75 crore in the mega auction of IPL 2025 , but his performance was not up to expectations even on Chennai pitches. He was even later dropped from the playing XI.
R Ashwin played a total of 9 matches for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025, which finished last in the points table. He got only 7 wickets in these matches. His economy rate was 9.12. He was the sixth highest wicket-taker for CSK in the season, while in the race for the Purple Cap i.e. in the list of bowlers who took the most wickets in the season, he was at number 49. Overall, he is the fifth highest wicket-taker in IPL. He has taken 187 wickets in 221 matches.
