The Income Tax Department had recently tweeted that the e-filing portal developed by Infosys is still facing technical glitches, due to which normal traffic cannot come. In such a situation, experts are speculating that the department may extend the deadline for filing ITR this year as well.

New Delhi. The last date for filing income tax returns for the last financial year (2021-22) is approaching and so far only 10 per cent of the taxpayers have filed their returns. In such a situation, there are speculations that the Income Tax Department may extend the last date for filing ITR.

According to Livemint , due to the Kovid-19 epidemic, the Income Tax Department had extended the last date for filing returns for the last two years. In such a situation, many experts and taxpayers are again speculating that the deadline for filing returns will be extended this year too. At present, the Income Tax Department has fixed July 31, 2022 as the last date for filing returns this year. In the last two years, apart from the epidemic, the deadline for returns was extended due to technical glitches coming on the portal.

What did the Income Tax Department say?

In a tweet on July 2, the Income Tax Department had said that the new software developed by Infosys is still unable to file returns continuously for taxpayers and the company is taking proactive measures to deal with these problems coming up on the portal. The department further wrote, it has been observed that some taxpayers are facing problem in accessing the e-filing portal of Income Tax Department. As stated by Infosys, they are resolving the issues related to irregular traffic on the portal. In such a situation, some users may have to face problems, for which we are sorry.

What do experts say

Income Tax experts say that the department in its recent tweet has expressed concern about the problems coming on the portal. Along with this, there has also been talk of slow running of the website. In such a situation, speculations can be made that the department may be preparing to increase the deadline for returns. Unfortunately, it will be said that almost a year has passed since the new Income Tax Portal was launched and till now it is not fully capable of handling the traffic. One of the reasons for this can also be that most of the taxpayers want to file their return as soon as possible.

ITR is still far behind the target

The department had released the data for the first week of July and said that the number of returnees is very less at present. Only 99.20 lakh people had filed returns till the first week, which is far behind the estimated number of total returns to be filed by July 31 at 7.5 crore. Experts say that with technical glitches on the portal, it is finding it very difficult that in the remaining 21 days, about 6.5 crore taxpayers will be able to file their returns…

In fact, the last date for filing the return of the last assessment year was extended by the department to March 15, which is quite high. In such a situation, there is a big possibility that the department will extend the deadline for at least 1 month this time. The department has also accepted that there are continuous technical glitches on the portal. The possibility of this also increases because the department has extended the deadline 8 times out of the last 11, including the increase in the Corona period.
