Indian Railways has implemented a significant decision to promote the welfare of its employees’ families. Now, unmarried, widowed, or divorced daughters of railway employees will be able to avail themselves of health benefits and travel passes even after the death of their parents. This move will provide relief to thousands of families who are financially vulnerable and rely on pensions or other government benefits.

New provision in health facilities

Previously, after the death of a railway employee , his widow received free medical care under the Widow Pass and the Retired Employees Liberalized Health Scheme (RELHS). However, after the wife’s death, these benefits were not extended to daughters. Now, the Railway Board has clarified that daughters will be considered an integral part of the family, providing them with free treatment, medicines, and other medical services at railway hospitals. The Health Directorate has confirmed that unmarried, widowed, or divorced daughters who meet the dependency criteria will not be excluded from this scheme. Universal Medical Identity Cards (UMEED) will also be issued on priority.

Ease of travel pass

A major change has also been made in travel facilities. Previously, the widow pass expired upon the death of the wife, but now it will be transferred to the eldest eligible daughter in the family. Other dependent members will also be able to travel using this pass, if they are eligible under the rules. This will allow daughters to travel across the country without additional expenses.

Impact on society and family

Shashikant Tripathi, Chief Public Relations Officer of North Central Railway (NCR), stated that this facility has been implemented in the NCR zone and will be strictly enforced. RD Yadav, General Secretary of the North Central Railway Men’s Union, said this was a long-standing demand of employees and their families. According to experts, this will not only empower women but also strengthen the social image of the Railways.

This change, in line with the recent circulars and clarifications issued by the Railway Board, further liberalizes the RELHS-97 and pass rules. Now, dependent daughters will be able to avail health and travel facilities without any discrimination, which will prove to be a symbol of security and self-reliance for them.
