India US Deal: India signs major agreement for LPG import from America, know the highlights

India US Deal: Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced this deal with the US on November 17. He explained that under this deal, PSU oil companies will import LPG from the US Gulf Coast in the contract year 2026.

India has signed a one-year deal to import LPG from the United States. Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced this on November 17th. He said that India has signed a historic deal with the United States to import LPG to diversify its energy sources. Government-owned oil companies have signed this deal to import 2.2 million tons of LPG annually.

Government is diversifying the sources of LPG

Puri shared this information on the social media platform X. He wrote in the post, “To ensure affordable LPG supply to the people of the country, we are diversifying our LPG sources. Under this deal, PSU oil companies will import LPG from the US Gulf Coast in contract year 2026. This is the first structured US LPG contract for the Indian market.”

Officials of IOC, BPCL and HPCL had gone to America

He said that the Mount Belvieu benchmark will be used for this LPG purchase. A team of top officials from IOC, BPCL, and HPCL visited the US. Prior to the deal, officials from the Indian companies held discussions with major oil producing companies over the past few months. Government-owned oil companies provide LPG to customers at low prices despite rising international prices.

The government’s focus is on providing cheap cylinders to customers.

The Petroleum Minister said, “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, PSU oil companies supply LPG to all our mothers and sisters at much lower prices than global prices. Despite global prices rising by 60 per cent last year, Modi ji ensured that Ujjwala consumers get LPG cylinders for just Rs 500-550, while the actual price of the cylinder was more than Rs 1,100.” Last year, the central government spent more than Rs 40,000 crore to provide cylinders to mothers and sisters at lower prices.

A trade deal with the US is expected by the end of this year.

This deal to import LPG from the US comes at a time when a trade deal is expected between the two countries by the end of this year. It is expected that US President Donald Trump will lift the additional 25 percent tariff imposed on India on oil purchases from Russia, effective August 26th of this year. This brings the total US tariff on India to 50 percent.
