New Delhi To ensure supply in the domestic market and to hold down prices, the government has decided to extend the rebate on onion imports till 31 January. The government announced a waiver in some provisions of onion imports on 21 October. This discount was given till 15 December. The Ministry of Agriculture stated that the exemption in import provisions would be conditional. Consignments coming to India will be tested and they will be allowed to enter the market only if they are free from pests etc. The consignment will be sent back if it finds any flaws in the investigation.
The Ministry of Agriculture issued an official statement on Thursday, saying that there is concern among the common people about the high prices of onions in the market. Keeping this in view, the relaxation in the onion import rules is now being extended till 31 January 2021.
According to the ministry, the relaxation in the import rules is based on several conditions. Under these conditions, an affidavit will also be taken from importers that imported onions will be used only for consumption.

Onion is being imported through private trade. With the arrival of new crop, onion prices have started coming down in some parts of the country. For example, in the national capital Delhi, onion prices have come down to Rs 40 per kg. Earlier in October, onion prices had reached the level of Rs 65-70 per kg. The government then announced a waiver in the provisions related to imports.
