The meeting of the parliamentary committee regarding the Electricity Amendment Bill 2022 will be held on 1 December. Representatives of the Ministry of Energy will attend this meeting at 11 am and will give a presentation on the new bill. He will give his stand on how the changes in the bill will ensure 24X7 power availability and what an important role it will play for Genecos. Let us inform that the Electricity Amendment Bill 2022 was introduced by the government in the Lok Sabha in the monsoon session. Regarding this bill, the government says that electricity consumers will get a lot of benefit if this bill is passed. Because of this bill, there will be competition among the electricity companies, which will benefit the consumers.
But there is a lot of opposition to this bill. The winter session of the Parliament is going to start from 7th December. Before preparing to pass this bill in the winter session, power companies have warned the central government, while electricity workers and engineers are also protesting against this bill.
What is Electricity Amendment Bill 2022
Discom portability is now possible like mobile portability under the Electricity Amendment Bill. With this, electricity consumers will get better facilities. Competition among power companies will benefit consumers. If the power company cuts the power without informing, then they will have to pay compensation. Apart from this, the licensing of Discoms will end with the proposed amendment. Also, if they provide Renewable Energy, then the customer will get cheap electricity. The law has provisions for strengthening the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity (APTEL) and penalties for non-fulfilment of renewable purchase commitments (RPOs).
There the Electricity Contract Enforcement Authority will be established. Getting electricity connection will be easy and connection will be available within the prescribed limit. Due to Ease of Doing many reliefs will be available. Connection will be made in 7 days in metro city, 15 in municipality and maximum 30 days in rural areas. A detailed blueprint of services and facilities will be prepared for the customer. The connection will be in the name of the landlord only, by this fake connections can be stopped.
