According to the data released by the Ministry of Health, more than 199 crore doses of vaccine have been given in the country so far. Of these, the number of third or precaution doses is about 5.11 crores. This includes all adults above 18. However, in people between 18 and 59 years of age, the number of prescription doses is only 72 lakhs, while in the age of 60 or above, its number is 2.67 crores. Precaution dosage for people in the age group of 18-59 years was started on 10th April this year.

Anurag Thakur said that the government will do whatever it takes to protect the health of the people. Thakur said that even when the vaccine was started, many opposition parties and people had expressed different apprehensions about it.

The official said that most of the population of India had got their second dose nine months ago. Studies conducted at ICMR and other international research institutes have shown that antibody levels begin to drop in about six months after taking two initial doses of the vaccine and immunity builds up with booster doses.

The Union Health Ministry last week reduced the interval between the second and precautionary dose of the Kovid vaccine for all from nine months to six months. This was done on the recommendation of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization.
