Electricity Bill Hiked in UP: Common people in Uttar Pradesh are going to get a shock of inflation soon. Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) is planning to increase electricity rates by 30 percent. If reports are to be believed, electricity rates may soon increase by 30 percent in UP. Power companies have sent a proposal to the Electricity Regulatory Commission for 2025-26. It shows a huge loss. A request has been made to the commission to compensate for this. If the commission approves it, then electricity rates may increase by up to 30 percent.

According to the report, considering the rising expenses, the power companies have estimated a loss of Rs 19,600 crore from the current electricity rates. To compensate for the loss calculated on the basis of actual income and expenditure, the electric companies want a record 30 percent increase in the current electricity rates. They have demanded from the Regulatory Commission that considering the condition of the Power Corporation, the increase in rates should be considered.

Officials claimed that there has been no increase in electricity rates in UP for the last five years. Due to this, the revenue deficit has increased by 12.4 percent. UPPCL has presented the figures to the Electricity Regulatory Commission and said that it cannot bear any more losses.

He said that till now the electricity rates are being decided on the basis of the revenue gap arising out of the expenditure and income of the electricity companies. But the electricity companies say that in reality 100% recovery of electricity bills is never possible.

According to officials, only 88 percent of the electricity bills of power companies have been recovered in the financial year 2024-25. Due to this, even after the subsidy given by the UP government, this gap has increased from Rs 4,378 crore in the year 2023-24 to Rs 13,542 crore.

Similarly, in this financial year 2025-26, even after getting subsidy from the Uttar Pradesh government, this loss is expected to increase to Rs 19,600 crore. To compensate for this loss, a demand has been made to increase the current electricity rates by about 30 percent.

According to the electricity department, about 10 percent of the transformers in the state are not working properly. Despite the recovery drive, 54.24 lakh consumers have not paid their electricity bills even once. All these consumers owe Rs 36,353 crore.

According to the report, 78.65 lakh people have not paid their electricity bills for the last six months. They also have electricity bills of Rs 36,117 crore pending. Due to this, the corporation’s losses are continuously increasing. On the other hand, protests against the increase in electricity rates have also started. Energy and consumer organizations have accused the government of benefiting private houses.
