Significantly, the Taliban has captured Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. At the same time, an official of the extremist organization had said that he would soon announce the formation of the ‘Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’ from Rashtrapati Bhavan in Kabul.

Taliban spokesman Suhail Shahin said the extremist group is in talks to create an “open, inclusive Islamic government” in Afghanistan. Shaheen said this after the Taliban captured most of the country in a few days and entered the capital Kabul. Earlier, a Taliban official had said that the outfit would announce a new government from Rashtrapati Bhavan, but that plan seems to be shelved for the time being. At the same time, a group of Taliban fighters are seen inside the Rashtrapati Bhavan in the pictures aired by Al-Jazeera news channel.

At the same time, a US State Department official said that the American flag has been taken down from the US embassy in Kabul amid the evacuation of its people from Afghanistan. Almost all the embassy officials have been airlifted to the city’s international airport, where thousands of Americans and others are waiting for the planes, the official said. The official said that the American flag is with one of the embassy officials.

On Sunday night, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Pentagon said in a joint statement that they were taking steps for the safe departure of people from Kabul airport. It said that over the next two days, 6,000 US security personnel would be there and they would take over air traffic control. In the last two weeks, about 2,000 people holding special visas have reached the US from Kabul.

Biden administration shocked by rapid Taliban occupation of Afghanistan

US President Joe Biden and other top US officials on Sunday marveled at the speed with which the Taliban took control of Afghanistan. The planned withdrawal of US forces in Afghanistan has quickly turned into a mission to ensure a safe evacuation.

The rapid collapse of the Afghan government and the chaos that has spread there is a serious test for Biden as commander in chief. As of Sunday, key administration figures admitted they were taken aback by the swift defeat of Afghan security forces as they had not anticipated.
