Waitlist Ticket Rule: Railways has fixed the limit of waiting tickets in long distance trains. This will reduce the crowd, provide relief to confirmed passengers and reduce chaos on the platform.
Waitlist Ticket Rule: Indian Railways has taken a big decision to fix the maximum limit of waiting tickets in long distance trains. This change has come into effect from 16 June 2025. Under the new instructions of the Railway Board, now the limit of waiting tickets in Sleeper, Third AC (3AC), Second AC (2AC) and First AC (1AC) coaches has been limited to 25% of the total berths.
The Railway Board has taken this step with the aim of controlling the increasing crowd at stations across the country and chaos in trains. Now this quota will be applicable not only at the starting station of the train but also at the intermediate stations from where passengers board long distance trains.
What used to happen till now?
Till now the number of waiting tickets used to vary according to the zone of the Railways. In zones like Central and Western Railways, waiting tickets were issued for 20-40% of the total seats. Sometimes this figure reached 500 to 700 waiting tickets, which created chaos and fights to board the train.
The Railway Board circular states that this 25% waiting limit will be equally applicable to Tatkal quota and tickets issued from remote stations.
How will the rule work?
According to railway officials, if there are 72 berths in a 3AC coach, then only 18 waiting tickets will be issued after the booking is completed. This will avoid heavy crowd in the train. Earlier, due to more waiting tickets, even coaches like sleeper used to have conditions like running coaches.
There will be less crowd on the platform too
The new rule is also expected to provide relief to the Railway Protection Force (RPF). In fact, due to more waiting tickets, there used to be excessive crowd on the platform during festivals and holidays. It was very difficult to handle this. But now, the situation can be controlled better with limited waiting tickets.
Passengers will also get great relief
This change will not only reduce the crowd, but will also reduce the disputes between confirmed and waiting passengers. Earlier, passengers with confirmed tickets often used to argue with those on the waiting list about seats and other things. Many times it used to lead to fights. Due to the new rules, such arguments are also expected to decrease.
