In a historic move to standardize national symbols, the Union Home Ministry has issued a comprehensive set of guidelines for the performance of India’s national song, Vande Mataram. Historically, while the National Anthem has had rigid statutory protocols, the National Song remained largely governed by custom.

Effective February 2026, the government has formalized the “Official Version” of the song, requiring all six stanzas of Bankim Chandra Chatterji’s original 1875 composition to be performed at specific state functions. This directive coincides with the 150th anniversary of the song’s creation, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the release of a ₹150 commemorative coin and a special stamp.
The New “Six-Stanza” Rule: Length and Duration
The most significant change is the transition from the truncated two-stanza version to the full six-stanza rendition.
-
Official Duration: The performance must last 3 minutes and 10 seconds.
-
Pre-Song Alert: To ensure the audience is prepared, the rendition must be preceded by a drumroll (specifically using a mridangam, trumpet, or bugle).
-
Marching Protocol: In military or paramilitary drills, the song must be preceded by exactly seven slow marching steps.
Mandatory Occasions: When the Song Must Be Played
The MHA guidelines categorize events into three specific groups based on the level of formality required.
-
Civil Investiture & State Functions: Mandatory during the arrival and departure of the President of India and State Governors.
-
Flag Hoisting: Mandatory during the unfurling of the Tricolour at all official government buildings and ceremonies.
-
National Broadcasts: To be played immediately before and after the President’s address to the nation on All India Radio (Akashwani) and Doordarshan.

Etiquette & Decorum: Standing Rules and Cinema Exemptions
The new rules establish clear physical decorum requirements to prevent the “vigilantism” or confusion seen in previous years.
-
Standing at Attention: All members of the audience are required to stand in an attention pose whenever the official version is sung or played.
-
The Cinema Hall Exception: Crucially, the MHA clarified that standing is not mandatory in cinema halls if the song is part of a film, newsreel, or documentary. The ministry noted that standing during a screening “interferes with the viewing and can lead to a disturbance of peace.”
-
Disabled Persons: Standard exemptions for persons with disabilities—allowing them to show respect through conduct commensurate with their capabilities—remain in full effect.
Schools and Educational Institutions: Daily Requirements
Educational institutions have been given specific instructions to integrate the song into their cultural fabric.
-
Morning Assemblies: All schools are directed to begin their daily operations with the group singing of Vande Mataram.
-
Mass Singing: For non-ceremonial cultural events, the guidelines encourage “mass singing” supported by trained choirs and printed lyrics to ensure uniformity in rhythm and lyrics.
