TRAI, the regulator of telecom companies, said in its recommendation that a system of displaying the name of the caller on the mobile phone screen should be introduced under the ‘Calling Name Presentation’ (CNAP) supplementary service.

If everything goes well, you will be able to see the name of a new number on the phone before receiving the call. In fact, telecom regulator TRAI has recommended starting a service that displays the name of the person making the call on the phone screen in the telecom network.

TRAI recommended

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in its recommendation said that the system of displaying the name of the caller on the screen of the mobile phone should be introduced under the ‘Calling Name Presentation’ (CNAP) supplementary service. However, all telecom companies will provide this facility only on the request of the customer. The introduction of this feature will help a lot in getting rid of frequent unwanted calls. When the CNAP feature is activated, the customer will be able to see the name of the caller on his phone screen.

How to start the facility

TRAI said the government should issue appropriate instructions to telecom companies to make CNAP feature available in all phones sold in India after a specified date. The name and identity details given in the Customer Application Form (CAF) to be filled at the time of taking mobile phone connection can be used during CNAP service.

Apps like Truecaller provide convenience

Where homegrown smartphone tools and apps like Truecaller and Bharat Caller also provide caller name identification and spam detection facilities. But these services are based on data collected from people which is not always reliable. The telecom regulator recommended that all access service providers provide CNAP service to their telephone customers on request. Let us inform you that TRAI had issued a consultation paper in this regard in November, 2022, seeking comments from stakeholders, public and industry. However, the government has to decide when this new facility will be implemented.
