The Choke is Back: Delhi AQI Slips Hard to ‘Very Poor,’ Hits 400+ in Hotspots

0

Delhi’s brief pollution respite is over. The AQI plunged back to ‘very poor’ at 340 average, with several areas like Anand Vihar, Bawana, and Akshardham hitting near-Severe (400+) levels. That two-day break happened. And then the toxic smog returned. Details on the CPCB readings and the month-long pollution fight.

It’s back. Just when you thought we had a break—that couple of days where the AQI dipped down to “poor”—Delhi’s air quality is trash again. The brief respite happened. And then the toxic smog followed.

As of Tuesday morning, the city-wide average is sitting at 340 AQI. That’s a firm return to the ‘very poor’ zone. We were at 279 on Sunday, flirting with moderation. That’s all over now.

Hotspots are Choking

The average is grim, but the localized readings are brutal. This is where it’s actually happening:

  • Akshardham: Shrouded in toxic smog this morning. The AQI there was reading 383.

  • Ghazipur: Right near the ‘severe’ zone, also hitting 383.

  • Anand Vihar, Bawana: Real-time data shows these and several other hotspots pushed right up to the 400 mark, sometimes even crossing into the dreaded ‘Hazardous’ territory. You see the smog. And then your eyes start burning.

This is the prolonged pollution spell we’ve been battling all winter. The CPCB classifies 301 to 400 as ‘very poor’. Anything over 400 is ‘severe’, or what some trackers call ‘hazardous’. Many areas are sitting right on that red line.

The November Scorecard

Let’s be real about the context. The month of November was just a prolonged choke.

  • The average AQI for November was 357. Dead center in ‘very poor’.

  • Zero. Absolutely zero days that were ‘good’, ‘satisfactory’, or even ‘moderate’.

  • We only had three days that were ‘poor’. The rest? Twenty-four were ‘very poor’, and three were flat-out ‘severe’.

So, that two-day relief was an anomaly, not a trend. With the cold setting in—the minimum temperature for today is forecast to be a chilly 7circ \text{C}—the low wind speed is trapping everything. The pollution gets stuck. And then we all breathe it.
