Canada Student Visa: Canada has strictly increased the study permit of international students. Due to this, in August 2025, about 74% of Indian students’ study visa applications were rejected.
The Immigration Department of Canada said that they detected many such study permits, which were associated with fake acceptance letters and most of these cases were from India.
Canada has taken a big step by tightening international student permits. This decision has had the biggest impact on Indian students. According to government data, what was once a favorite destination for Indian students is now losing its appeal.
Canada has reduced the number of international student permits issued for the second consecutive year starting in 2025. This is part of a larger effort to reduce the number of temporary immigrants and prevent student visa fraud.

74% of Indian students’ study permits cancelled
According to immigration data obtained by Reuters, about 74% of Indian applications for study at Canadian post-secondary institutions were rejected in August, compared to about 32% in August 2023.
The number of Indian applicants also decreased.
Additionally, Canada rejected study permit applications for about 40% of all foreign students in those months. Meanwhile, study permits for about 24% of Chinese students were rejected this August. This has also led to a decline in the number of Indian applicants, which was 20,900 in August 2023, to 4,515 in August 2025.
Increase in study permit cancellations during difficult times
India has been Canada’s largest source of international students over the past decade. However, India had the highest study permit rejection rate of any country, with more than 1,000 approved applicants in August. The increase in study permit rejections comes as Canada and India seek to mend ties after more than a year of tensions.
Most fake acceptance letters come from India.
Canada’s immigration department told Reuters in an email that in 2023, Canadian authorities detected about 1,550 study permit applications that were linked to fake acceptance letters, most of which were from India.
Canada’s right to issue study permits
The Indian Embassy in Ottawa said that while it has come to their attention that study permit applications of students in India have been rejected, it is Canada’s prerogative to issue study permits.
“However, we want to emphasize that some of the best students in the world come from India, and Canadian institutions have benefited greatly from the talent and academic excellence of these students in the past,” the embassy said in a statement.
