Now, the process of getting a mobile phone connection or converting it from pre-paid to postpaid or vice versa has been made easy by the government. Users will be able to do all the work related to KYC through online mode sitting at home. This means they will not require physical KYC to buy a new SIM or MNP (Mobile Number Portability).

The entire process has been made digital which does not require any physical presence. With the Union Cabinet approving major reforms in procedures in the telecom sector, several changes have been made for the convenience of mobile phone users. Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said after the cabinet meeting, “All the processes while getting a new SIM or MNP will be digital. There will be no physical KYC. Know about the new rules here.”

Complete work will be done in just 1 rupee

As per the new rule, users will be able to fill KYC through online mode without worrying about physical presence amid COVID themselves. The entire process has been made app based. Interestingly, users will have to pay just Re 1 for online or e-KYC. They will not require fresh KYC to convert from pre-paid to post-paid connection or vice versa. Earlier it was mandatory to do so.

No paperwork required in Digital India

Vaishnav said, self-KYC (app-based) is allowed and the e-KYC rate has been revised to Re 1 only. We all have mobile connections and whatever the connection is, we have filled some forms. All these forms are deposited in the godowns and there are 300-400 crore forms in the godowns. In Digital India, there is no need for this paperwork. The decision has been taken to digitize the processes in the telecom sectors without the need for any paperwork. This step has also been taken keeping in mind the challenges of COVID-19 in the telecom sector.
