MUMBAI — The Indian rupee edged higher on Tuesday, rebounding 0.2% to 96.2350 against the U.S. dollar after reaching a two-month low earlier in the week. The currency’s recovery was aided by a temporary retreat in global crude oil prices following reports of diplomatic engagement between the U.S. and Iran, combined with steady foreign currency inflows generated through the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) special incentive schemes.

Traders are closely monitoring the central bank’s foreign exchange intervention policy as internal debates continue regarding how aggressively reserves should be deployed to curb currency depreciation.

2. Oil Volatility & Central Bank Policy Debate

While easing oil prices provided immediate relief to import-heavy Asian markets, geopolitical friction—including threats of naval blockades in the Red Sea—continues to keep energy markets volatile.

Key Drivers Influencing Rupee Dynamics

Market Driver Current Status Impact on Indian Rupee
Crude Oil Prices Fluctuating following U.S.-Iran diplomatic mediation reports. Eases import bill pressure when prices drop below weekly highs.
RBI Dollar Reserves ~$674 billion buffer used selectively to smooth extreme volatility. Prevents speculative runs without defending rigid exchange rate bands.
NRI Deposit Schemes FCNR(B) window active until Sept 30; ECBs until Dec 31. Provides steady structural dollar inflows to offset capital outflows.
