The state government has taken a big decision in the interest of government employees. The government has approved the proposal of increasing the retirement age of government employees presented in the cabinet meeting. This decision of the government has brought a wave of happiness on the faces of government employees. However, the government has also put a condition on this decision, which is that when there is no eligible candidate for promotion, then the retirement age should be increased. This decision has come when the government was under pressure to give opportunity to young officers.

Retirement Age Increased: Retirement age increased by two years

According to reports, the Pramod Sawant government in Goa took a major decision on Wednesday, raising the retirement age of chief engineers of the Public Works Department (PWD), Drinking Water Department, Water Resources Department, and Goa Electricity Department from 60 to 62. Chief Minister Sawant clarified that the current chief engineer will not receive an extension if a qualified candidate is found.

High Court raises objection

This move comes at a time when the government is facing allegations of repeatedly granting extensions to government officials. Recently, a principal chief engineer of the PWD was granted three extensions after retirement. This drew strong objections from the Bombay High Court. In October, the High Court directed the state government and the Goa Public Service Commission to make arrangements to prevent the need for extensions.

New Age for Retirement: Cabinet meeting approves

The court had asked the government to change recruitment rules or qualifications to give younger officers a chance to fill vacant positions. However, the cabinet has amended service rules to allow senior engineers to remain in service. This means that young talent may find it more difficult to emerge.
