Indian Railways on Tuesday officially announced the renaming of a station in the Pune division of the Central Railway. Ahmednagar station will now be known as Ahilyanagar Railway Station. The station’s renaming is said to be a tribute to Lokmata Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar.
This change by the Indian Railways is in accordance with a notification issued by the Maharashtra government and a letter from the Surveyor General of India. According to the Railways, the station’s name has been changed, but its station code has not been changed. The Ahilyanagar station code will remain ANG.
Ajit Pawar had raised the demand
After the name change, the station’s names in different languages will be Ahilyanagar in Devanagari (Marathi), AHILYANAGAR in Devanagari (Hindi) and Roman (English). Significantly, the Maharashtra government issued a notification last Friday to change the name of Ahmednagar Railway Station to Ahilyanagar Railway Station after receiving approval from the Union Home Ministry.
It’s worth noting that Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar wrote to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav last month demanding the renaming of Ahmednagar Railway Station. After receiving the central government’s approval, he stated that the long-standing demand had now been fulfilled. It’s worth noting that the Maharashtra government had previously changed the name of Ahmednagar district to Ahilyanagar district. Subsequently, a letter was written to the Railway Minister requesting that the existing station’s name be changed to reflect the city’s new name.
The name of the district was changed last year
Last year, the name of Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra was changed and the state government’s demand to change it to Punyashlok Ahilya Devi district was approved by the Union Cabinet. This change was proposed by the Maharashtra Cabinet on 13 March 2024, which was officially renamed on 4 October 2024 after the approval of the Union Home Ministry. Union Revenue Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, while giving his reaction after the approval of the Center regarding the name change, called this decision a historic event.
Process to change the name of a railway station
The process of changing a station’s name in India involves several steps and government approvals. When a proposal for a station’s name change is received by the state government, it reviews it, approves it if deemed appropriate, and forwards it to the central government. After receiving NOCs from all departments, the Home Ministry finalizes the proposal and issues an official notification. Following Home Ministry approval, the Ministry of Railways and Indian Railways begin the process of officially changing the station’s name.
