There was a full month lockdown in April and as a result 121 million people or 12.1 million people have lost their jobs. However its recovery started in May and June and so far 9.1 crore people have got employment.

The Union Labor Ministry is considering giving huge relief to the unemployed. According to the new proposal, employees attached to ESIC will be given an allowance for 6 months in the event of unemployment. This allowance will be equal to 50% of the last salary. Currently, in case of unemployment, an allowance is given equal to 25% of the last salary. Apart from this, the period of allowance is also just three months. Not only this, according to the current rule, this scheme can be availed only once, but now this limit will also be removed. According to the Economic Times report, this proposal will be introduced in the meeting of the members of the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) on 20 August. If this proposal is approved, then 3.2 crore subscribers of ESIC will benefit.

The idea of bringing such a proposal was given by the PMO. In fact, due to large scale loss of jobs in the Corona era, the government wants to give concession in this scheme so that maximum number of people can get benefits. On the lines of unemployment allowance being received in countries like America, Canada, the government wants to benefit millions of people who lost jobs through this scheme. An official said that this proposal was presented before the PMO last week. It will now be put up for approval at the ESIC meeting.
