If you haven’t yet linked your PAN and Aadhaar, or want to know whether the linking was successful, you can now check your PAN-Aadhaar link status without the internet with just an SMS. Learn the step-by-step process:

Check PAN-Aadhaar Link Status via SMS

The Income Tax Department in India has made it mandatory for all taxpayers to link their PAN and Aadhaar. If the two documents are not linked, your PAN may be considered “inactive,” which could hinder financial transactions, tax refunds, bank account verification, and investment-related processes. Many people want to know whether their PAN and Aadhaar are linked, but visiting the website each time to check is a hassle.

Check by sending SMS

Now, the government has introduced a very easy way to check your PAN-Aadhaar link status via SMS. This means you no longer need the internet or a website; simply sending a short message can help you find out if your PAN and Aadhaar are linked. This method is especially useful in rural areas or areas with low internet access. Let’s explore how you can check your PAN-Aadhaar link status in minutes with a simple SMS, and what to do if the link isn’t there.

How to check PAN-Aadhaar link status through SMS

Now, you can check your PAN-Aadhaar link status without opening any website or using the internet, simply by sending an SMS. Follow the steps below: Learn the step-by-step process in the next slide:

Step 1:

Open the SMS app on your mobile phone. Now type a new message in this format 👉 UIDPAN <space> <12 digit Aadhaar number> <space> <10 digit PAN number> Example: UIDPAN 123456789012 ABCDE1234F

Step 2:

Send this message to 567678 or 56161. Within a few seconds, you will receive an SMS reply from the Income Tax Department stating whether your PAN and Aadhaar are “Linked” or “Not Linked.” If your PAN and Aadhaar are linked, you will receive the message: “Your PAN <PAN Number> is already linked with Aadhaar <Aadhaar Number>.” If not linked, you will receive the message: “Your PAN <PAN Number> is not linked with Aadhaar <Aadhaar Number>.”

What to do if PAN and Aadhaar are not linked?

If you receive an SMS stating that your PAN and Aadhaar are not linked, don’t panic. You can link them using any of the following methods: Method 1: Visit the online website at https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal. Open the “Link Aadhaar” section. Enter your PAN, Aadhaar number, and mobile number. Verify via OTP and complete the linking process.

Method 2:

Link via SMS. You can also link PAN-Aadhaar via SMS. The format remains the same: UIDPAN <12-digit Aadhaar> <10-digit PAN> and send it to 567678 or 56161.

What harm can occur if PAN-Aadhaar is not linked?

Your PAN number will become inactive. You will not be able to file your Income Tax Return (ITR). Financial transactions, such as those with banks and mutual funds, may be halted. Your credit score may be affected. You may experience problems with government subsidies and PF-related services. Therefore, it is important to check the linking status as soon as possible and, if necessary, link immediately.
