The arrival of spring brings with it one of the most spiritually significant periods in the Hindu calendar. As of Wednesday, March 18, 2026, devotees across the country are preparing for Chaitra Navratri, which begins tomorrow. Despite some online debate regarding the start date, Vedic calculations and Drik Panchang have confirmed that the nine-day festival commences on March 19.

This period is not just about fasting; it is a time for self-purification, celebrating the divine feminine energy (Shakti), and welcoming the Hindu New Year.

Key Timings: Ghatsthapana & Abhijit Muhurat

The most critical ritual of Navratri is Ghatsthapana (installing the sacred pot). Doing this during the right Muhurat is believed to bring prosperity and peace.

  • Pratipada Tithi Begins: March 19, 2026 – 06:52 AM

  • Pratipada Tithi Ends: March 20, 2026 – 04:52 AM

  • Ghatsthapana Shubh Muhurat: 06:52 AM to 07:43 AM (March 19)

  • Abhijit Muhurat (Alternate): 12:05 PM to 12:53 PM (March 19)

The Nine Days of Devotion: March 19 – March 27

Each day is dedicated to a specific avatar of Goddess Durga:

  1. March 19: Shailputri Puja (Ghatsthapana)

  2. March 20: Brahmacharini Puja

  3. March 21: Chandraghanta Puja

  4. March 22: Kushmanda Puja

  5. March 23: Skandamata Puja

  6. March 24: Katyayani Puja

  7. March 25: Kalaratri Puja

  8. March 26: Mahagauri Puja (Ashtami)

  9. March 27: Siddhidatri Puja & Ram Navami

Step-by-Step Puja Rituals at Home

For those observing the festival at home, following these traditional steps ensures a sanctified environment:

  • Preparation: Wake up during Brahma Muhurat, bathe, and clean the puja area.

  • Sthapana: Place the idol of Maa Durga on a wooden platform covered with a red cloth.

  • Kalash: Fill a copper/brass pot with water, place betel nuts, coins, and mango leaves, and top it with a coconut wrapped in red cloth (Chunari).

  • Offerings: Light a Desi Ghee Akhand Jyot (lamp) and offer fresh flowers, fruits, and Shringar items (bangles, sindoor).

  • Sattvik Diet: If fasting, consume only fruits, milk, and specific grains like Sabudana or Kuttu (buckwheat).

Reality Check

The confusion between March 19 and 20 arises because the Pratipada Tithi starts after sunrise on the 19th in some regions but covers the majority of the day. Still, since the Tithi begins at 06:52 AM on the 19th, it perfectly aligns with the morning puja requirements. Therefore, waiting until the 20th would mean missing the primary Udaya Tithi of the first day. In fact, most major temples in India (including Vaishno Devi) have scheduled their first Aarti for tomorrow morning, March 19.

The Loopholes

The guide mentions a Ghatsthapana Muhurat of just 51 minutes (06:52 AM to 07:43 AM). In fact, this is the “Optimal Window Loophole”—if you miss this short morning window due to work or travel, the Abhijit Muhurat (12:05 PM to 12:53 PM) is an equally valid and scripturally approved time for Kalash Sthapana. Therefore, do not panic if you cannot finish rituals by 7:45 AM. Still, the “Akhand Jyot Loophole” remains; while it is ideal to keep the lamp burning for 9 days, if it accidentally goes out, simply offer a prayer of apology and relight it—it does not “cancel” your fast.

What This Means for You

If you are planning to fast, start your preparations tonight. First, realize that the markets will be extremely crowded today for Vrat ingredients. Then, if you are working tomorrow, understand that you should aim for the 12:05 PM Abhijit Muhurat to perform your puja calmly during your lunch break.

Finally, understand that Ram Navami falls on a Friday (March 27). You should check if your local community is organizing a Kanya Pujan (worshipping young girls) on Ashtami or Navami, as this is the most popular way to conclude the fast. Before you start your puja tomorrow, ensure you have “Ganga Jal” and fresh mango leaves ready, as these are often the hardest to find at the last minute.

What’s Next

Expect local temples to be crowded starting at 4:00 AM tomorrow. Then, look for Navratri-special menus to launch in restaurants across the city from tomorrow afternoon. Finally, expect Ram Navami preparations to peak by next Thursday, with large-scale processions likely being planned for the final day, March 27.
