User charges can be levied in about 1050 railway stations

You may have to pay extra charge to catch the train from a more busy railway station. In fact, the central government is now considering to levy user charges at railway stations on the lines of the airport. Indian Railways to charge passengers at redvelp and more busy stations. Railway Board Chairman B K Yadav said that the decision has been taken to generate revenue for the purpose of providing better facilities to the passengers. This will be the first time after it comes into effect when such a fee will be charged from the railway passengers.

How much will the user charge take?

According to railways, the user will initially be charged at the congested railway station in big cities. At present, there are 7000 railway stations in the country, out of which about 10-15% of the stations will be charged user charge. That means, user charge can be levied in about 1050 railway stations. However, it is not mentioned how much user charge will take but it has been clarified that the fee will be modest. Let us say that the railways will issue a notification to charge user charges at stations which are being redesigned or have been redirected.



Delhi-Mumbai railway station to be rejuvenated

Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant has said that these stations will be made globally under the PP model. He said the appeal is that private companies in the country and abroad should participate in this bidding process. Amitabh Kant said that New Delhi and Mumbai railway stations will be fully rejuvenating. Railways can contribute 1.5 to 2 per cent of the country’s GDP and that is possible. The meeting was given a presentation on the rejuvenation of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminal railway stations in New Delhi and Mumbai.

Are not privatising the Railways.

Amitabh Kant has said in his statement that the railways are not being privatized. Private companies will run trains for a few years. Will be technology and investment. Modernity is needed in the country. If banks like ICICI, HDFC come to the country, as SBI is not closed, there will be no harm from private railways but the company will increase.
