New GST registration system from November 1: How will it be different from the previous one?

0

The central government will implement a new GST registration system from November 1, 2025. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced this on Friday. This move aims to simplify the registration process for small businesses and public sector entities.

The new system will eliminate the manual registration process for small businesses whose monthly tax is less than ₹2.5 lakh. Such businesses will receive automatic approval of their registration applications within working days. This will reduce the time required for the registration process.

According to a News18 report, Ranjit Mahtani, partner at Dhruva Advisors, says that a simplified GST registration scheme will be implemented from November 1st. This is part of the GST 2.0 reforms. The new registration system is expected to reduce pressure on both field offices and taxpayers. This is because most applicants will receive GST registration automatically.

Success will depend on the GSTN portal

Experts believe that this simplified system will allow tax authorities to focus on in-depth investigations of high-risk cases. However, this will also depend on the number of low-risk applicants. According to Mahtani, given the history of technical glitches, the success of this simplified GST registration system will depend on how the GSTN portal functions once it is implemented.

GST 2.0 was implemented from September 22

Under GST 2.0, the government has retained only two GST tax slabs—5 percent and 18 percent. The remaining two slabs, 12 percent and 28 percent, have been eliminated. A special 40 percent tax slab has also been established for luxury items and sin goods. GST 2.0 is scheduled to be implemented from September 22, 2025.
