Cyclone Montha: Cyclone ‘Montha’ is set to hit the coastal states of India by Tuesday evening. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy rain in states like Odisha, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh.

Cyclone ‘Montha’, formed in the Bay of Bengal, was moving towards Andhra Pradesh on Monday. According to the Meteorological Department, this storm will hit the coast near Kakinada around Tuesday midnight and then move towards southern Odisha, passing between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam .

This season’s first major storm is currently centered over the west-central Bay of Bengal and moving north-northwestward. It is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm before making landfall, with wind speeds of 90 to 100 kilometers per hour. The Andhra Pradesh government has issued a high alert in Kakinada, Konaseema, West Godavari, Eluru, and East Godavari districts. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to ensure full preparedness to prevent any loss of life or property from the cyclone.

Army and NDRF on alert

Municipal Administration Minister P. Narayana, the minister in charge of Kakinada, is monitoring the situation closely and is present there. Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar, the minister in charge of Eluru, has also arrived in the city. On Monday, Narayana held a review meeting at the Kakinada Collectorate and stated that 269 rehabilitation centers have been prepared with all necessary facilities. Thirty NDRF teams and 50 SDRF teams have been deployed for relief operations. Earthmovers, tractors, and generators with adequate fuel are also on standby.

He said that approximately 140 pregnant women from nearby villages have been safely shifted to hospitals. All necessary supplies and medicines have been provided. Additionally, all schools and colleges have been declared closed until Wednesday. The government has also ensured that all fishermen return from the sea with their boats to prevent any further damage.

The state government made extensive preparations

In Konaseema and West Godavari districts, the administration has set up approximately 140 rehabilitation centers in coastal areas, where adequate arrangements have been made for food, milk, medicines, and medical staff. Municipal officials have been instructed to cut or trim old or weak trees along city and national highways to prevent accidents during the storm. People have been urged to remain indoors until the storm passes and not to venture out unnecessarily. Several government buildings have been evacuated and placed on standby to deal with any emergency .

In Eluru district, the administration has prepared 82 cyclone relief centers. Around 130 small irrigation ponds and water bodies have been identified as vulnerable. Government employees and trained swimmers have been deployed to monitor them so that immediate action can be taken in case of any danger.

Hoardings and advertising boards removed from across the city

Most hoardings and billboards have been removed from the city to prevent accidents caused by strong winds. Essential supplies have already been sent to the 14 island villages in the district. Revenue and police personnel have been deployed for security near all causeways and bridges. Andhra Pradesh is expected to be the hardest hit by the storm. Red and orange alerts have been issued in 23 districts of the state. Along with this, a warning of heavy rain and strong winds has also been issued in the southern coastal areas of Odisha. According to the Meteorological Department, Chennai and the northern districts of Tamil Nadu are also likely to receive heavy rain in the coming days.
