It’s official. The cold has truly arrived. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued its warnings, and then the chill followed. It’s sweeping through Delhi, Kashmir, and big chunks of Himachal Pradesh.

The North Hits Below Zero
The high-altitude regions? They got hit with fresh snow. That happened. And then the temperatures plunged.
-
Kashmir: Light snowfall swept through central Kashmir. Shopian, in the south, recorded a bone-chilling minus 4.2 degrees Celsius. It is now the coldest place on the map, leaving Srinagar’s minus 2.5°C behind. This kind of cold—that’s what makes the Srinagar-Leh highway slippery, and dangerous.
-
Himachal Pradesh: The tribal regions are freezing. Places like Rohtang Pass, near Manali, they got snow yesterday. And here’s the kicker: the Manali-Leh road? Officials have officially closed it past Darcha. It’s too dangerous. This is routine winter closure, honestly, but it shows how quickly the conditions turn.
The Cold Wave Spreads South and East
The thing is, this isn’t staying confined to the mountains. The cold wave is just starting its journey across the plains.
The IMD warned that the conditions will hit in waves:
-
Today (Dec 9th): The cold wave already started across central, eastern, and northern peninsular India.

-
The Next Wave: From December 10th to 13th, the cold wave is very likely to spread into isolated pockets in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha.
-
The Delhi/Punjab Chill: Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi—you’ll feel the full cold wave around December 12th and 13th. Punjab gets hit slightly earlier, starting December 11th.
What draws people there? The early morning fog. Dense fog is expected to mess with visibility, especially in the early hours. Watch out if you’re commuting in Assam, Manipur, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha over the next few days.
Right now, minimum temperatures are set to drop by about 2 degrees Celsius over the plains of northwest India over the next two days. It’s an ongoing, deepening winter situation. Get the extra blankets out.
