The Maharashtra Cabinet on Wednesday approved amendments to laws that will increase the maximum daily working hours for private sector employees from the current nine to ten hours.
According to news agency PTI, an official statement said the move is aimed at attracting investments, increasing employment while protecting the rights of workers.
The state cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, approved the changes suggested by the central task force. This joins states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and Tripura that have already implemented similar reforms.
Important changes in the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 2017
According to the information, Devendra Fadnavis government of Maharashtra has made important changes in the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 2017. Under this, the government is planning to increase the maximum working hours of employees in private institutions from the current 9 hours to 10 hours per day. This will be applicable in places like shops, hotels and entertainment places in the state. It will regulate the working hours for the employees working there.
According to media reports, the Labor Department has also proposed to increase the overtime period for private sector employees from 125 hours to 144 hours in three months. At present, the maximum working time in a day is fixed at 10.5 hours (including overtime). Which is now proposed to be increased to 12 hours. In case of urgent work, it has also been proposed to remove the limit of 12 hours of maximum working time per day. That is, in such a situation, there will be no maximum limit of work.
Women will be able to work outside till late night
According to the website of Navbharat Times, as per the new rules, it will be necessary to give breaks in between to give rest to the employees. So that they do not have too much work pressure. Another big change is going to happen that after the formation of new labor laws, women employees may be allowed to work till late night. The government argued behind this that this will increase job opportunities for women.
