Lightning strikes apartment building in Mumbai, video goes viral

The regional office of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Pune, Ratnagiri and Nashik on Wednesday. IMD has warned of heavy rain in these areas in the next five days.


Mumbai:Heavy rains lashed Mumbai on Thursday evening, disrupting road and rail traffic in some parts of the city. News agency PTI has given this information quoting officials. This was the second consecutive day, when Mumbai received heavy rains. On Wednesday too, there was heavy rain with lightning in the city. The island city had recorded 30.96 mm of rain in a 24-hour period till 8 am on Thursday. Many people have posted pictures and videos of rain and lightning in Mumbai, some of them looking scary.

A video shows lightning in Mumbai’s Borivali West area. According to the caption of the video, lightning struck the Neminath building but no damage was reported there.

A user who posted the video clip on Twitter said, “It was definitely scary! Luckily they installed a lightning rod in the building, so if lightning strikes it goes straight into the ground.”

The eight-second video showed lightning with a loud sound falling on the building. The video was recorded from a neighboring building. As lightning strikes the building, the person holding the camera starts trembling.


Due to heavy rains, there has been waterlogging in low-lying areas of Mumbai. There are also reports that some drains have been flooded. The rains have affected the movement of trains as the tracks were flooded.
