Levying penalty for 'late filing' of ITR probably a glitch: Officials

The last date for filing returns was extended to September 30 from July 31.

The levying of penalty in the income tax returns’ new website is probably a technical glitch, said the IT department’s public relations officer Leo.

users who attempted to file the return of 2021-22 on Sunday were fined Rs. 1000 and Rs. 5000 under various provisions of section 234F of the IT Act.

When asked whether the fine levied will be refunded, Leo said that the grievances cell of IT department have not received any complaint yet.

“Maybe people are waiting for the technical problem to be solved. There have been issues since the launch on June 7. But the department has taken it up seriously and is working towards resolving them,” he told mathrubhumi.com.

He clarified that since the last date to file ITR is extended to September 30, no one will have to pay any fine if they file the return on time.

The last date for filing returns was extended to September 30 from July 31. However, it is believed that the website was not updated with this information and started fining the users from August 1 onwards.

The officers at the Income Tax department also told mathrubhumi.com that they were unaware of the glitch. “There is no way that you will be fined at this point,” an officer said.
