Tokyo:At least eight people died in Japan due to a series of earthquakes on New Year’s Day. Many houses were damaged by the earthquake and a massive fire broke out in many houses. Some people are stranded, rescue operation is going on to save them. The actual figure of damage caused by 155 earthquakes in one day has not been revealed yet. Japanese media reports show collapsed buildings, sunken boats at a port, large numbers of burnt houses and local people forced to live without electricity in the harsh winter.

Footage shared on social media showed road signals and display boards at railway stations shaking after the earthquake, whose magnitude was 7.6. The Japanese government issued a tsunami warning after the earthquake, and told residents of coastal areas not to return to their homes because deadly waves could still occur.

Thousands of military personnel, firefighters and police officers from across the country have been sent to the worst-hit area on the Noto Peninsula. However, rescue efforts have been hampered by badly damaged and blocked roads and an airport in the area has been forced to close due to cracks in the runway.

After the earthquake, some buildings collapsed, many fires broke out and tsunami warnings were sent as far as eastern Russia, while people in coastal areas of Japan were ordered to evacuate. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported earthquakes off the coast of Ishikawa and surrounding prefectures shortly after 4 p.m., one of which had a preliminary magnitude of 7.6.
