After filing Income Tax Return (ITR), the thing every taxpayer waits for the most is the refund. Many people start checking their bank account from the very next day as soon as they file their return.

But there are thousands of taxpayers whose ITR status is showing under processing for weeks or months. There are constant complaints on social media that 70 days have passed, the refund has not come yet or the refund is stuck for 83 days. Everyone has the same question that why is the money stuck?

The reality is that the delay in refund is not always due to the system, but money can also get stuck due to some technical and documentation related mistakes. Tax experts say that if these reasons are corrected in time, then the refund can be received quickly. Let us know the 6 major reasons due to which your ITR refund can get stuck.

1. Bank account not pre-validated

As per the rules of the Income Tax Department, your bank account should be pre-validated. If the name in the PAN and bank account does not match or the IFSC code is wrong, the refund will be stopped there.

2. Not doing e-verification of ITR It

is necessary to do e-verification within 30 days of filing the return. If this step is missed then your ITR will be considered invalid and you will not get any refund.

3. Not linking PAN and Aadhaar:

In today’s time, it is mandatory to link PAN-Aadhaar. If your PAN is not linked to Aadhaar, then the return process will stop.

4. TDS mismatch

It often happens that there is a difference between the TDS shown in Form 26AS or AIS and the information filed by your employer or deductor. In such a situation, the department stops the refund and first asks for clarity.

5. Having a big refund:

The income tax department does more scrutiny when the refund is above Rs 50,000. Due to the large amount, the department does cross-verification before issuing the refund, which can cause delays.

6. Mistake in bank details like

entering wrong account number, providing old account number or entering a deactivated account can also stop the refund.

What to do?

Taxpayers are advised to check the status of their ITR regularly on the incometax.gov.in portal. If any discrepancy is noticed, correct it immediately. Once all the details are correct and e-verification is done, the refund is received within 2 to 5 weeks under normal circumstances.
