ITR Filing 2025: The Income Tax Department is keeping a strict eye on those who claim fake deductions in ITR filing. The department is now cross-verifying with Form 26AS, AIS and bank data. If a fake claim is caught, there can be heavy fines and punishment. Know what 8 things should be kept in mind while filing returns.
1. 80C deduction shown without investment
Many people claim deduction of ₹ 1.5 lakh under 80C without investing in ELSS, PPF or LIC. But now the tax department is cross-checking this with Form 26AS and AIS. Through this, wrong claims are being caught.
2. Making fake HRA claims can be costly
Some employees take HRA deduction even without living on rent. But the department is now checking these claims with the landlord’s PAN and bank transactions.
3. Fake home loan interest claim
If you have not taken any home loan and still have shown deduction of interest under section 24(b), then your claim may be rejected if you do not have a loan statement.
4. Mistakes in showing medical expenses
A certificate is required for medical expenses or disability-related deduction under section 80DDB or 80U of the Income Tax. Claiming without documents can lead to investigation and penalty.
5. False interest deduction of education loan
Many people who show interest on education loan under section 80E enter fake loan details. But now the department can catch this by taking data directly from the bank.
6. Tax exemption irregularities on donations too
Some people take deduction under 80G by showing donation in the name of old or fake NGOs. Now this cross verification is being done with the validity and receipts of the NGO.
7. Overclaiming in section 80TTA/80TTB
The limit for bank interest deduction is ₹10,000 (80TTA) and ₹50,000 (80TTB), but some people show more than this. This discrepancy can be clearly caught by the entry of savings interest in AIS.
8. Wrong advice in the name of tax saving
Some fraudulent people advise to fill fake deductions to save tax. But if caught, the entire responsibility lies with the taxpayers and they also get the punishment. In such a situation, you should avoid this.
