There was speculation about TikTok’s return to India that this app is going to enter again but now the government has clarified its stand on this matter. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw clarified the government’s stand on the ongoing discussion about TikTok’s return to India and said that there are no plans to lift the ban on the Chinese short-video platform.

This is how the discussion on TikTok’s return started

In an interview with Moneycontrol, Ashwini Vaishnaw clarified that there has been no discussion on this issue yet. Responding to speculations that TikTok’s parent company ByteDance is preparing to return to India, he said, no such proposal has come from any side. Last month, these speculations gained momentum after TikTok’s website was available for some time on some broadband and mobile networks including Airtel and Vodafone in India. After this small glitch, discussions started on social media that the app might return, but now officials have clarified that this is not the case.

TikTok Ban: When was TikTok banned?

TikTok was banned in India in June 2020, when the central government blocked 59 Chinese apps citing national security and data privacy concerns. Soon after, Apple and Google also removed these apps from the stores and the ban was made permanent in January 2021. At that time, India had the largest user base of TikTok, with over 20 crore people using the platform.

Before the restrictions were tightened, Chinese investors such as Tencent, Alibaba, Ant Financial and Shunwei Capital were the biggest supporters of Indian startups. They had invested heavily in sectors such as e-commerce, fintech, food delivery, mobility, digital content and education technology.
