If you travel by train then there is important news for you. Indian Railways has changed the important rules related to waiting tickets. According to Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), now sleeper class tickets will not be upgraded to First AC, even if the berths are vacant, let’s know about it…

Ticket upgrade will be done only till this category

Now sleeper class tickets will be upgraded only up to two classes. According to IRCTC, this change has been made to make seat distribution in reserved coaches in the train more systematic and to control crowding in higher category coaches. To implement this new rule, the Center for Railway Information System (CRIS) is updating its software.

What was the first rule?

Earlier, a waitlisted train passenger’s ticket was upgraded to a higher category than the one booked if a seat was not available. Earlier, a waiting passenger with a sleeper class ticket was auto upgraded to a higher class such as third-AC (3A), second AC (2A) or first AC (1A) as per availability. Now the ticket will not be upgraded to first AC. A third AC ticket can be upgraded to a maximum of first AC.

Know the terms of auto-upgrade

  • The auto-upgrade facility will be available only if the auto-upgrade option is selected or it is left on default (Yes).
  • If you have selected (No), the ticket will not be upgraded even if seats are available in higher category.
  • If you do not select any option, the system considers it as ‘Yes’ by default.

Indian Railways has implemented new rules for waiting tickets from 1 May 2025. According to this rule, now passengers with waiting tickets are not allowed to travel in sleeper or AC coaches. Now passengers with waiting tickets can travel only in general coaches. If the passenger travels in sleeper or AC coach with a waiting ticket, he will be fined. The passenger will have to pay a fine of Rs 440 for AC and Rs 250 for sleeper. Now every train ticket booked from IRCTC website or app will require OTP-based mobile verification.
