Indian Railways has made a major change to enhance passenger convenience. Parents can now easily decide whether they need a seat for their child and book tickets accordingly. This will make train journeys comfortable and hassle-free.
Keeping passengers’ convenience in mind, Indian Railways has made significant changes to the rules for booking tickets for children. It is now easier for parents or guardians to travel with their young children. According to the new rules, children under the age of 5 can travel without tickets, but if they require a separate seat or berth, they must pay the full fare.

Big relief for children below 5 years
The Railways has provided relief for young children, clarifying that if a child under 5 years of age does not require a separate seat, they can be carried on the train without a ticket. This means that parents can travel with the child on their lap. However, if, for some reason, a separate berth or seat is booked for the child, the full adult fare will be charged.
Special rules for children aged 5 to 12 years
Railways have established separate rules for children aged 5 to 12 years. If children under this age do not require a seat or berth and the ‘No Seat/No Berth (NOSB)’ option is selected during ticket booking, they will receive tickets at half price. However, if a seat or berth is requested for the child, the full adult fare will be charged. Furthermore, Railways has clarified that children over the age of 12 will be treated as adults and will be charged the normal fare.
Keep these things in mind while booking tickets
According to new railway regulations, it is crucial to enter the child’s correct age when booking tickets. Many passengers mistakenly enter the wrong age, which can invalidate the ticket and result in a fine. Therefore, ensure you enter the child’s correct date of birth and age when completing the ticket. It is also important to carry a child’s age proof document, such as an Aadhaar card or birth certificate, with you during your travel. This may need to be shown to officials during any inspection.
