The Finance Ministry said that the Income Tax Department has noticed some mismatch between the third party information on interest and dividend income and the Income Tax Returns (ITR) filed by the taxpayers.

The Finance Ministry said that the Income Tax Department has noticed some mismatch between the third party information on interest and dividend income and the Income Tax Returns (ITR) filed by the taxpayers. The ministry said that as per the information available with the Income Tax Department, taxpayers are being informed about the mismatched information through SMS and email. It has also been told that this message is not a notice.

The IT department has identified some mismatches between the information received from third parties on interest and dividend income and the Income Tax Returns (ITR) filed by taxpayers. In many cases, taxpayers have not even filed their ITR.

How to answer?

Taxpayers can respond on-screen on the Compliance Portal of the e-filing website to resolve mismatched information.

The ministry said that to remove the discrepancy, taxpayers have been given an on-screen information in the compliance portal of the e-filing website https://eportal.incometax.gov.in to give their feedback.

Currently, information related to financial years 2021-22 and 2022-23 is shown mismatched on the portal.

Taxpayers who are already registered on the e-filing website can directly visit the portal after logging into their account. The mismatched information identified will be available under the ‘e-Verification’ tab.

Taxpayers who are not registered on the e-filing website will have to register themselves on the e-filing website to view the mismatch.

For registration, “Register” button can be clicked on the e-filing website and information can be given.

After successful registration one can login to the e-filing account and navigate to the portal to view the mismatch.

Taxpayers can give their answers on-screen. They can also help correct mismatched information.

There is no need to present any document. The ministry said that taxpayers are being given an opportunity to reach out and respond appropriately. This opportunity is being given by the IT department.
