Health Ministry’s major decision! Transgender children, siblings, and children will receive lifelong CGHS benefits.

CGHS : The central government has made an important decision for CGHS cardholders. Now, transgender children and siblings dependent on central government employees and pensioners will also receive treatment under the CGHS (Central Government Health Scheme) and the CS(MA) Rules, 1944.

There will be no age limit for their treatment. This decision is in accordance with the Transgender Persons Protection of Rights Act, 2019. The Health Ministry implemented it through an office memorandum.

Who will be eligible?

To benefit from this new system, two conditions will be necessary. First, the transgender dependent must be wholly dependent on a central government employee or pensioner, and their monthly income must not exceed ₹9,000. Dearness relief will also be included in this provision. Second, a certificate from the District Magistrate must be issued certifying the transgender person’s identity.

What is the difference

Until now, CGHS rules had different age requirements for different dependents. Sons were covered until they reached the age of 25, or until they earned money or were married. Daughters were covered until they were married or earned money. However, there will now be no age limit for transgender children and siblings. As long as they meet the income and dependency criteria, they will remain eligible for treatment.

This change has brought relief to many families. Previously, transgender dependents were denied this benefit after reaching a certain age, but now they will receive lifelong medical coverage. This will ensure their health is protected. This is an important step taken by the government.
