The southern states of India have achieved the target of bringing the Maternal Death Ratio (MMR) below the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. This is reflected in the latest Sample Registration System (SRS) findings for 2016-18. All India MMR stood at 113 in 2016-18. India’s MMR stood at 130 and 122 respectively in 2014-16 and 2015-17.
Talking about the states, Kerala has the lowest 43 MMR. Assam had the highest 215. The ‘Empowered Action Group’ (which includes Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand) and Assam had 161 MMR. Regional changes occur in MMR. The long-term trends of MMR show that states with high MMR have improved conditions.

MMR is the maternal mortality rate during birth of every 100,000 live children. For example, the MMR range of Assam is 133–297 while that of Kerala is 10–77. In India, 65 percent of mothers between the ages of 20 and 29 die. On the other hand, according to SRS data, women of this age group have a share of 23 percent in non-maternal mortality.
