Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has decided to increase the Dearness Allowance (DA), giving a gift to lakhs of employees before Dussehra. The Dhami government of Uttarakhand has increased the dearness allowance in different ways for the employees getting salary on the basis of Fifth Pay Commission and Sixth Pay Commission. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has approved the increase in dearness allowance of employees of public bodies and undertakings.

When will you get the benefit of increased DA

According to a report by news agency ANI, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has approved the increase in the current rate of Dearness Allowance from 455% to 466% from January 01, 2025 for the employees of public bodies and undertakings receiving salary in the fifth central pay scale and from 246% to 252% from January 01, 2025 for the employees of public bodies and undertakings receiving salary in the sixth central pay scale.

How is DA calculated

DA (Dearness Allowance) is given to employees and pensioners to provide relief from inflation. Its calculation is based on the inflation rate (CPI–Consumer Price Index). DA is decided by different rules for different employees. For central government employees, average CPI (Industrial Worker) is taken on the basis of base year (2001=100 or 2016=100).

How DA is calculated in states

DA calculation in states is based on the announcement of the central government. Most states (UP, MP, Rajasthan, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Kerala etc.) implement the DA rates of the central government, but it is approved with a delay of a few weeks or months. Some states (Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, West Bengal) decide DA on their own by taking the central government rate as the basis, but the percentage usually remains the same. DA is also paid to state employees and state pensioners as a percentage of basic salary and pension.

Suppose the central government has declared 50% declared DA, then the states which have accepted it will give 50% DA of the basic salary of their employees. If the basic pay of an employee is Rs 30,000, then Rs 15,000 will be given as DA.

How much will the employees of Uttarakhand benefit

In Uttarakhand, DA has been increased by 11% for employees receiving salary on the basis of the fifth pay commission. Now if the basic salary of a government employee is Rs 20,000, then he will get a benefit of about Rs 2,200 at the rate of 11%. At the same time, for those receiving salary on the basis of the sixth pay commission, the government has increased the dearness allowance by 6%, so they will get a benefit of Rs 1,200 per month on the basis of a basic salary of Rs 20,000.
